52 Solutions Interview with the Author

An ongoing "52 Solutions Interview" with Leadership and Executive Coach Gary Wood. Continue to check back, as we will add to the discussion in the next few weeks.

52 Solutions For Those Who Need a 25 Hour Day
What gave you the initial idea for the 52 Solutions?

About 10 years ago I conducted an all day training for about 40 church leaders titled “Being a Good Steward of You”. It covered a days worth of topics to help these leaders avoid burnout and improve personal effectiveness. Since then I have used these simple strategies with my individual coaching clients and organizations with good results. I finally thought it was time to pull a number of the strategies together in one place and challenge leaders and professionals to be intentional about improving how they handle the simple things that can make a big difference each day. I thought a book on beating burnout was going to come out first, but it’s going to be later.

Is there a particular solution that is a favourite of yours, or resonates strongly for you?

There are a several of them, but the important ones are always the ones I'm personally working on right now. Currently I've taken # 26 Change Pace as my personal “52 Challenge”. Lately I have spent a lot of time in the office, either on the phone or on the computer. I want to stay at peak performance and be at my best for my family and my clients, so I've had to revisit balancing periods of intensity with periods of renewal and energizing. I am scheduling a daily walk back into my routine again. Of course that's made more motivating by the fact that spring might just be around the corner.

How do you feel about having your first book published?

Truthfully, I'm both excited about the possibilities of it being a help to leaders and worried that it isn't quite perfect. Thankfully it isn't designed to be perfect. It's designed to be really simple and practical and to be a spark that gets people moving. Sparks that cause explosions of insight and action normally aren't perfect, just catalytic.

If you could give one piece of advice to busy people reading this 52 Solutions Interview, who want to be more effective in their work, what would it be?

Find something this week that will improve your effectiveness by just 1%. Put it into practice. Be very intentional about it. Next week do the same. 1% is doable. Over time all those one percent's will add up. By the way, occasionally throw in a big, big positive shift in the way you do things. Never stand for mediocrity.
