Career Advancement and Burnout
Career advancement and burnout are often linked. Moving up is held up as an ideal, often over family. Buying into 'moving up the ladder' as the only priority is chasing after illusions. Some organizations espouse it. Some leaders and executives buy into it until the wheels fall off and they find themselves facing significant stress. "Career advancement is everything here. If you're not prepared to put the company or organization ahead of anything else, including personal and family life, don't ever plan on being in major management positions within this company." Under the guise of the company looking for the best and the brightest talent, those who are distracted by other things, which would include personal and family matters are considered poor choices for promotion. Of course leaders and executives want to advance in their career. But they don't want to do it at the expense of their other priorities. This is a tough one. We know it causes workplace stress and leads to business burnout, but it also puts money in the bank. We don't pretend it's easy. Take the time to record and plan for your personal, life priorities. Include a plan for spouse, children and living a full and satisfying life. Having a master plan to refer to will put career decision-making in a larger and fuller context. Those leaders and executives who know where they are going in life will probably be better at helping the organization know where to go in business or service.
