10 Areas of Life-Work Balance
Life-work balance is more than stuffing other things in around work. It is having an intentional plan to do well in all areas of life. You may be experiencing job burnout because your thinking is faulty. Let's start giving thought to a better future, one that includes finding balance. How to Use this Exercise: I have adapted a list of life balance areas from Jack Lannom's book "Untapped Potential" c.1998, Thomas Nelson, Inc.
Ask yourself on a scale of 1 - 10 just how well you are doing in each of these life areas. Are you balanced and satisfied or 'coming up short'? This is valuable information to know about yourself. Take the time to think about it.
- Family (Spouse, children, parents)
- Spiritual (Relationship with God and church)
- Emotional (Dealing responsibly with life)
- Work (Career goals, business, income, professional development)
- Social (Friendships and associations)
- Financial (Stability and responsibility)
- Cultural (Arts, music, entertainment)
- Recreational (Travel, sports, hobbies)
- Physical (Fitness and overall health)
- Intellectual (Learning and education)
We all benefit from having work life balance in our lives. That doesn’t mean that we give equal time to each area, but simply that we give adequate time to each area in a way that reflects who we are and what we need to be our best.
If there is an area that you feel no inclination toward (ie: Recreational – you never travel, don’t engage in sporting activities and have no hobbies) ask yourself why? It may be legitimate. On the other hand it may be that adding this dimension into your life is the very thing you need to restore life-work balance and how to overcome burnout. You may not even be aware that it has been missing or that there is a need for it.
This requires a high level of personal awareness on your part. Take the time to think about it. Talk about it with Gary during coaching.
